In 2001, Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes, C.M., officiated at the world’s first legal same-sex marriages, in Toronto.
In this free lecture, he will speak of his personal and spiritual struggle growing up gay in rural New Brunswick, linking it to self-discovery, political activism and his historic role in the legal recognition of same-sex marriages.
In addition, Dr. Karen Pearlston, UNB Law School, will speak of the struggle for LGBT rights in Canada. A question andanswer period will be moderated by CBC reporter Barbara Roberts.
