Exam period just seems to stretch on forever doesn’t it?  Well over at STU Info we’ve had some time to kill and we’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite online sites to kill time when we should be studying.

It doesn’t include Facebook though, because as we mentioned previously, it lowers your grades.

• XKCD – The pinacle of geeky internet comics.  Almost dangerously funny.  (Mouse over the comics to get extra text.)
• Red vs Blue – Ah the classic Halo based videos.  If you haven’t seen them in a while, there is a new epic mini-series called Reconstruction.
• Watch Great Commercials – We’ve complied a list of our favourite commercials, all in one playlist.
• Go sightseeing with Google Earth – Travelling is expensive.  Save some cash by checking out some awesome sights.

  • Jon Lajoie *NSFW*- Born and raised in Montreal, this comedian has produced some pretty amusing videos.  We recommend Not Giving a F@ck!, and Jon’s most popular video Show Me Your Genitals
  • Picnicface – Halifax based comedy sketch group. Classics include Powerthirst and All About Halifax.
  • Watch Glen Beck make a fool of Fox News, and himself.
  • Kinda makes you miss the good ol’ days when Fox was just angry people.

• LolCatz - Who doesn’t love cats saying silly things with terrible grammar?  Well, I imagine some of you do.

• The Snowclone Database – Where memes are born.
• Google Trends – Keep up with what people are googling. Right now!

Fredericton’s long road to a Costco hit another snag this week.  The plan to add an expanded parking lot and gas-bar didn’t sit well with dozens of people who attended a city council meeting on Monday.

The money is gone because the students are gone.
This is what happens when essentially all of the Union’s revenue is tied directly to student fees.  Shrinking enrollment at St. Thomas University leads directly to less money in the coffers for the Union to provide services with.

Unlike UNB and other university’s student unions, STUSU doesn’t operate a single revenue generating venture (like a store or a pub).  So when enrollment is down, cash is down.

So where are the students?  STU’s been on a pretty steady slide for the last several years.  Here’s the info we dug up:

This is all in a Maritime atmosphere of general, very small decline.

Next week we’re going to look into what was cut to meet the reduced budget.

A study at Ohio State University is showing a strong connection between students spending time on Facebook and lower grades.  Almost a full letter grade lower.  Ouch.

Susan Reid, Ph.D.

Students in Dr. Susan Reid’s CRIM 3283-Crime Prevention course have an exciting opportunity before them this month.

On April 15, a conference on crime reduction will be bringing stakeholders together to discuss the best approach to crime reduction in Canada. Organized by the Department of Public Safety, the conference will bring law officials, RCMP officers, government officials, criminologists, and scholars under one roof to look at the most efficient way to reduce crime.

Thanks to Dr. Reid, those stakeholders will also have the experience of hearing what engaged students think of their proposed strategies. Reid’s students have spent part of the semester examining evidence-based crime prevention strategies and have summarized their findings into presentations that will be on display during the conference.

“The National Crime Prevention Centre has decided to only provide funding to crime prevention programs based on research evidence, so our students have the opportunity to give stakeholders a sampling of the research literature on these programs, ” said Reid.

Reid noted that many criminology graduates go on to work in government, law, policing, residential care or educational-based positions, and this conference will allow the students to engage in a dialogue about the interplay between the research evidence and the application of “best practices” with those who work in the field.

Some of the displays at the conference will be: “Life Skills Training” – an evidence-based drug and alcohol prevention curriculum aimed at middle school students; “Job Corps” – which is a pre-employment and job placement initiative targeting multiple barrier youth, and; “Nurse Family Partnership” – which is a program designed to enhance the quality of life for young, disadvantaged mothers and their infants.

Already operational in parts of the province is the program “Communities that Care” which focuses on the implementation of community-wide strategies that are designed to define risks and enhance protective factors through wrap-around services in the community.

In addition to the knowledge displays put on by St. Thomas students, the conference will also include a traditional sweat lodge ceremony led by Elder Maggie Pail from St. Mary’s First Nation and a “Wellness Walk” which will give participants a chance to visit the Addictions Centre, Homeless Shelter, Victory Centre, Community Kitchen, John Howard Society, and related services on Fredericton’s south side.

Did you know that out of that $108, just 39 cents goes to the Public Relations budget? Safe Wheels costs you only $3.53 per year.
